Who is Judy Thompson?
The second of five children, Judy (nee Lafferty) was raised in rural Ontario not far from the city of Toronto. Her father was a lawyer and her mother an artist. She inherited her love of travel from her parents. Where her brutal honesty, passion for animals and obsession with dice came from is anyone’s guess.
A year abroad for Grade 13 piqued Judy's interest in languages and other cultures. She studied French and German and has been fortunate to live in many European countries as well as South Korea.
With a Bachelor of Arts in English and a certificate to Teach English as a Second Language (TESL) Judy began her career designing and delivering language programs in Ontario and around the world.
Founder of Thompson Language Center, Judy Thompson revolutionized the way English is being taught with her ground-breaking textbook English is Stupid. Included in the text is the color-coded Thompson Vowel Chart as part of a highly functional pronunciation tool - the English Phonetic Alphabet (EPA).
Currently a professor at Sheridan College Judy teaches Essential Communications as well as her own language training program Speaking Canadian English. She presents lively informative seminars to TESL instructors across the nation .
An active member of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers (CAPS), Judy delivers leading-edge strategies to individuals, associations and businesses, based on how English works, its role in global markets, and the art of successful communication.
A long time resident of Caledon, Ontario, Judy has four children and lives with her husband Richard on a beautiful ten-acre hobby farm. She is an environmental activist who enjoys hiking and skiing. In her spare time, she raises champion hunter show ponies.
